Perciv AI test at RDW proving ground

📢 Perciv AI on test track! 📢

What do you do when you want to test perception systems in various high speed scenarios in a repeatable, and more importantly, safe way?

We at Perciv AI decided to give a visit to the RDW (the Netherlands Vehicle Authority) test track in Lelystad!

Together with our partners, Rijkswaterstaat and Radarxense BV, we have spent the day with performing different maneuvers at different speeds, mimicking highly dangerous scenarios such as a stopped vehicle at highway, or jailwalking pedestrian in heavy rain.

What did we learn?

▶️ Radar is the go-to sensor for long range static object detection, but it will only work with dedicated AI based perception

▶️ Radar is the go-to sensor for pedestrian detection in rainy nights, as the camera and Lidar can only see the pedestrian in such circumstances if in high visibility clothes, see the pic below

▶️ However, if you add reflective patches to the cloth, the pedestrian can also be "too visible" for lidar and lose its human shape, making their classification very challenging

These tests allow us to systematically evaluate our solutions while also look for challenging edge cases in the meantime.
