Perciv AI selected by the Dutch Road Authority to map tunnels for safety

When we say Perciv AI's main drive is road safety for all πŸš—, we mean itβ€”not just by developing the next generation of radar perception, but by understanding the limits of the current generation.

That's why, when Rijkswaterstaat, the Road Authority of the Netherlands πŸ‡³πŸ‡±, asked for our help, we didn't hesitate to say yes βœ….

Current radar systems, which don't detect elevation and rely on conventional perception algorithms, often get confused in tunnels 🚧. Reflections from ceilings and walls can be mistaken for obstacles on the road, leading to dangerous "phantom braking" at high speeds ⚠️.

Rijkswaterstaat asked us to use our next-gen 4D radars along with our multi-sensor recording stack (including lidar, camera, and odometry) to map multiple tunnels across the Netherlands, identifying potential danger spots. Some tunnels had to be temporarily closed πŸ›‘ (sorry commuters!), while others aren't even open to the public yet.

The results are 3D maps of the tunnels with centimeter accuracy and with a radar heatmap overlaid, with which we can identify problematic locations and objects, and increase the safety of these tunnels!
